Marriott Cancun Resort

Family Mexico holidays at the Marriott Cancun Resort - best kids resorts in Mexico

My wife and I were impressed with the Marriott Cancun Resort during our trip to Mexico last summer. We spent the majority of our time exploring Chichén Itzá, Isla Mujeres and shopping more than our budget allowed… oops!

But after a long day of exploration, we loved enjoying what the hotel had to offer. It was more than just a room. It was a comfy bed, beach access, a swimming pool, lawn games and plenty of lounge chairs. In the evening, a kid-friendly movie – Disney’s Coco in this case – was projected on an inflatable screen in the courtyard.

When we were hungry, 750 Degree Pizza in the hotel lobby was our go-to. From slices of pizza to Gelato desserts. We also picked up more than our share of Kinder eggs (a super delicious chocolate egg with a toy inside). The resort has other food options: an Argentine steakhouse, American sports bar, Japanese and Thai food, and a Mexican grill. The Marriott Cancun Resort is not all-inclusive, meaning food is not included. Prices range from $ to $$$$, depending on where you decide to dine.

If you want to go off-resort, a bus runs regularly along the main road (known as Hotel Zone) in front of the hotel. You can head downtown and do some shopping or grab a bite to eat. We walked a few minutes south of the hotel and enjoyed the Blue Gecko – a small restaurant/bar in a Tiki hut.

Although we were there without our kids, we saw all the things the Marriott Cancun Resort offered families. We would choose it again if our travel plans take the whole family to Cancun.

Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun

recommended by Catherine D'Cruz from We Go With Kids.

Now Sapphire Cancun Mexico resorts for kids
PC: Catherine D'Cruz from wegowithkids.com

Our family spent a gloriously relaxing 10 days at Now Sapphire in Riviera Maya while I was on my maternity leave with our third child. Our four and six year old boys enjoyed the main pool with floaties, and my husband and six year old were able to go on a snorkeling excursion that they still talk about four years later. We upgraded to the preferred club so that we could enjoy the preferred club lounge, access to poolside cabanas, and free WiFi throughout the resort.

We reserved poolside cabanas about every other day of our trip. With an infant, it was wonderful to spend most of the day relaxing on a large shaded bed at the side of the pool. Our boys were old enough to spend time at the Kids’ Club, but they only had a few brief stays (each at their own request). It was a great place to play video games on a rainy afternoon, and my oldest joined the group for beach soccer another morning. The kids in the club always seemed well-supervised and happy, and it would have been an indulgence to have a dinner date, but our daughter was too young, and we really wanted to spend as much time with them as possible during our trip.

The nighttime entertainment was also particularly memorable. We stopped in at the air-conditioned theater most nights after dinner and regularly ended up staying longer than we planned. Our favorite was the fire show on the beach, but the acrobats, musicians, and magicians were also fun for all ages. We thoroughly enjoyed this all-inclusive resort and would love to go back!

Don't forget plenty of sunscreen!

Sun Bum is our favorite. It works great, has a nice scent, and is hypoallergenic and paraben free. Most importantly, it's made with reef-safe ingredients which is now more important that ever - especially if you're going to be snorkeling in the ocean or around coral.

They also offer an amazing array of family activities, including family cooking classes, stand-up paddle board lessons, movie nights with beach bonfires, and family game nights. Their staff photographer can even capture all the fun for you.

Dining at the resort is world-class in every way, and although it's not all inclusive, you won't miss the buffet with these amazing choices. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos all inclusive family resorts MexicoDuring a short Thanksgiving trip to Los Cabos, we stayed at the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and really enjoyed it. This all-inclusive was a great mix of relaxation and activities for the kids. Rooms are beautiful and spacious, and the staff impressed us with their cheery attention to detail.

The Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has seven main restaurants to choose from, and we tried several during our stay. The teppanyaki grill at DoZo was a family favorite, as were the super-fresh fish tacos served up by the pool at Coco Loco. We were impressed overall with the cuisine and the quality. We don't normally stay at all-inclusive resorts, but we were looking for an easy vacation this time, and the Hyatt delivered. After our stay, we think this is one of the best Mexican resorts for families and would visit again.

Activities include a sports bar with video games for the kids, several swimming pools, spa, fitness center, and the beautiful beach only steps away. Two small water parks for the kids are also on the property (including one for toddlers and tots) and a Hyatt Kidz Club for ages 4-12. Be aware that because of strong currents, swimming in the ocean anywhere in Los Cabos is either discouraged or prohibited. We didn't mind strolling down the beach and getting our toes wet though.

For things to do away from the resort, San Jose del Cabo is within walking distance and Cabo San Lucas is just a short drive away. Across the street, you can book a dolphin encounter with Cabo Adventures. We took an afternoon to do this and had a lot of fun. The Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos has earned 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor with over 6,000 reviews, making it a solid choice for an easy family vacation to Los Cabos.

Things you'll love: Although this resort is managed by Playa Resorts, it's a Hyatt property, so families can use points to stay here. This makes it a great deal and an easy win for families who earn Chase or Hyatt points. Be sure to check out these other amazing Playa Resorts here.

Who should book: Families visiting Los Cabos for the first time and want an easy, relaxing vacation with minimal fuss. The Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is one of the best family all inclusive resorts in Mexico.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Grand Velas best family resorts in Mexico

The Grand Velas has made a name for itself as a luxury all-inclusive brand. We visited the Grand Velas Riviera Maya for spring break as part of a multi-generational trip of eight adults and seven children ranging from seven to fifteen. Of all the places we have traveled together as a family, the Grand Velas Riviera Maya was the hands down favorite for the kids and adults. Rooms in the Ambassador section were very spacious and well-located for easy access to the pool and beach.

The breadth of restaurant options, including some that are adult only, kept the foodies in the group happy. For those seeking relaxation, we have never experienced a better spa, but if you didn’t want to move from the pool, there were also poolside available that even the kids enjoyed. Of course, what the kids enjoyed most of all was the never-ending slew of activities available from the hamster ball in the pool, Euro-bungy on the beach, cultural shows, outdoor movies, two kid’s clubs, AND a teen-only club.

The price tag isn’t cheap, but our kids seemed to get our money’s worth out of smoothies at the swim-up bar, 24x7 room service pizza, and the in-room snack bar that we replenished daily. When you do want to leave the resort, the ziplines and caves of Xcaret are nearby, along with the ancient Mayan ruins in Tulum.

Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort

recommended by Jodi Grundig at Family Travel Magazine

Last year, for spring break, we traveled with five local families to Akumal, Mexico, in the Riviera Maya. Our group, with a total of 12 adults and 12 kids, settled on the Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort, an all-inclusive resort that offered something for everyone in our group.

Each room at the resort offers beautiful views of the beach. While the highlight here is definitely the beach, our group also really enjoyed time at the pool. Every morning, we would stake our claim on a section near the pool, and then separate based on interests.

While most stayed at the pool, some decided to take advantage of the wellness aspect of the resort. There are lots of classes offered, including Pilates, water aerobics, spinning, and yoga. Others decided to snorkel – and were able to see fish and sea turtles every time they went out. There’s much more, including a kids club (for kids under 12), paddle boarding, and beach volleyball.

As an all-inclusive resort, you’ll have plenty of food options. Many families go to the buffet due to all of the options, but there are also several smaller specialty dinner locations. These include Italian, French, and Peruvian restaurants. We tried every restaurant during our vacation. Our favorite place for lunch was the beachfront sushi bar. We ate there almost every day for lunch.

Each day, there was something else to enjoy. We especially loved the champagne and chocolate buffet. There’s also one day where sangria and paella was served by the pool.

Grand Bahia Principe Coba

recommended by Eileen Gunn at FamiliesGo!

Grand Bahia Principe best family friendly all inclusive resorts in Mexico
PC: Eileen Gunn from familiesgotravel.com

One of our favorite spots for an easy beach-resort getaway with kids is Bahia Principe, a sprawling all-inclusive resort complex on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera. The Coba section is the best bet with younger kids. It’s near the family pools, which include a colorful splash zone and large, float-friendly zero-entry pool. It’s also near the kids club, which underwhelmed us, but there was enough to do otherwise that we didn’t miss it.

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum and upscale, recently refurbished Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal face the beach and might be preferable with tween and teens. Their pools are fun but smaller and not as good for non-swimmers as Coba’s.

We snorkeled off the beach, caught a parrot show and a Mexican “birthday party” (with piñata) at the pool on different days and did a guided bike ride and jungle walk on the property. In addition to multiple buffets and snack bars, you can dine at a set number of nine table-service restaurants. Regulars have their favorites, so reservations are a good idea. I love Tequila’s upscale Mexican food and Mashua Nikkei’s Peruvian-Japanese fusion.

There’s evening entertainment if you want it, including a weekly live “fiesta” show that’s a lot of fun, but most nights we were tired from the water and sun and turned in early. You can easily find more upscale all-inclusive beach resorts, but the Bahia Principe Coba offers a beautiful setting, a lot of variety, and tremendously good value for the price we paid. In the gray days of winter, sometimes that’s all you need.

Club Med Ixtapa Pacific

recommended by Corinne McDermott from Have Baby Will Travel

Club Med Ixtapa Pacific family friendly resorts in Mexico
PC: Corinne McDermott at havebabywilltravel.com

Perhaps I’m dating myself when I say that I always imagined Club Med resorts to be for swinging singles. But our visit to Club Med Ixtapa Pacific in Zihuatanejo, Mexico when our daughter was a toddler changed all that. It’s safe to say we fully bought into Club Med’s philosophy for ensuring every member of your family has a wonderful vacation.

Children under two stay free at all Club Med resorts (except for the adult-only locations) and Club Med Ixtapa Pacific is one of three resorts in North America that offer the Baby Club Med services and amenities. Cribs, high chairs, change tables, and baby tubs are available upon request, and there’s a special toddler section at the buffet with jarred baby food available, along with simple foods suitable for new eaters. Baby Club Med also offers optional supervised programs run by multi-lingual early childhood education students. The level of care is really worth the extra money.

Club Med Ixtapa Pacific is truly a beautiful resort. Playa Linda is a glorious stretch of the Pacific, with sapphire water and golden sand that’s the perfect texture for sandcastles. The food is perhaps the most delicious I’ve had at an all-inclusive resort, and the service is incredibly warm and friendly. There are fantastic activities available all day for every age group, but no pressure if you’d rather just relax at the beach.

We had a fabulous vacation with a toddler, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Club Med Ixtapa Pacific to families with children of all ages. I’m still dreaming of lemonade and potato chips on the beach at sunset.
