Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Pictures

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has the distinction of being America’s first designated National Recreation Area.
At over 1.5 million acres, it is also the largest NRA in the Nation.
Lakes are only part of the fun here. In addition to the two largest lakes – Mead and Mojave – there are mountains, wilderness areas, trails, canyons, and wide open space to be explored. Lake mead NRA is a playground all year round, and is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
Lake Mead was created by the damming of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam which began construction in 1931. If you’re visiting Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam is easily visited and tours are offered daily.
Hoover Dam is just a short drive from Las Vegas and is just down the highway from the Lake Mead Visitor Center. While Hoover Dam isn’t a National Park Service site, it is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior and falls under the management of the Bureau of Reclamation.
